Blue, Black and Striped Marlin in a single day!

Port Stephens is one of Australia’s most iconic game fishing destinations and home of the largest game fishing tournament in the country, the NSW Interclub.

What makes Port Stephens truly special is the diversity of its marlin fishing. It is one of the few places in the world where blue, black, and striped marlin can all be encountered — and all three species can be caught in a single day.

Located just north of Sydney, Port Stephens is easily accessible while still delivering world-class offshore fishing. The proximity of deep water, productive current lines, and consistent bait concentrations produces exceptional marlin fishing here year after year.

Beyond the fishing, Port Stephens is a prime holiday destination in its own right.

Pristine beaches, sheltered waterways, and its close connection to Hunter Valley wine country as well as Newcastle and Sydney make it an ideal location for anglers travelling with partners, friends, or family — combining serious game fishing with a relaxed central coast escape.

    Black Marlin

From late spring through summer, black marlin in the 30-100kg range migrate south from Queensland waters, tracking schools of baitfish in the East Australian Current (EAC) and into New South Wales. Port Stephens sits perfectly along this migration route, creating consistent opportunities for black marlin encounters as the season progresses.

These fish are often highly active, feeding aggressively and providing exciting fishing relatively close to shore.

    Striped Marlin

Striped marlin are the foundation of Port Stephens’ reputation as a world‑class game fishing destination.

Nowhere else in Australia sees the same reliable numbers of striped marlin making them a defining feature of the fishery and a major drawcard for both tournament crews and visiting anglers.

These fish are often encountered in large packs on bait-balls providing action-packed days and creating the kind of consistent marlin fishing that few locations in the country can match.

    Blue Marlin

Blue marlin are typically encountered along the deeper water and current lines offshore, often associated with warm blue water pushing down the coast. The blue marlin are typically in the 200-300lb range but very big fish have been caught here and a grander blue is a distinct possibility.

For many anglers, a Port Stephens blue marlin represents the pinnacle of east coast game fishing — a true test of tackle, crew, and angler.

For serious anglers, Port Stephens offers the ultimate challenge — the rare opportunity to complete a marlin grand slam in a single day.
