Captain Tim Dean
Captain Tim Dean is one of the most respected and recognisable sport-fishing captains on Australia’s east coast.
With more than **25 years at the helm of Calypso for Calypso Fishing Adventures and Marlin Fishing Australia, Tim has built his life around the ocean and the pursuit of big game fish, guiding anglers from around the world from Port Stephens to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef.
Born in the NSW Snowy Mountains region and raised chasing fish along the south coast of New South Wales, his passion for the sport began as a child fishing with his father. That early love of the water quickly evolved into a lifelong commitment to offshore and big game fishing, and eventually into a career as a professional charter skipper on some of Australia’s most productive fishing grounds.
Under Tim’s leadership, Calypso has become synonymous with serious marlin fishing. The 47-foot O’Brien is outfitted with cutting-edge navigation and fishing electronics to maximise efficiency and fish-finding capability, reflecting Tim’s belief that confidence, preparation, and smart technology are key to success offshore.
Clients and fellow anglers often describe Tim as not only exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable, but also a true character on the water — entertaining, welcoming, and deeply committed to giving every guest the best possible experience. Whether breaking in novice anglers or experienced fishos chasing grander black marlin on the Ribbon Reefs, Tim’s combination of experience, humour, and professionalism has earned him a loyal following and a reputation as one of Australia’s premier game-fishing captains.
Off the water, Tim is engaged with the broader fishing community and regularly shares his adventures and insights through social media and industry partnerships, helping promote Australia’s world-class sport-fishing opportunities to anglers everywhere.
Tim is a former President of the Cairns Professional Game Fishing Association (CPGFA) and currently holds the position of Vice President. One of his proudest achievements during his tenure was helping bring the On The Edge documentary to life — showcasing the world-renowned Cairns giant black marlin fishery, its rich history, and its strong conservation focus to audiences around the globe.
Family that fishes together
Fishing is very much a family affair in the Dean family. Tim’s wife, Rebecca “Bec” Dean, is an accomplished angler in her own right and a current women’s world-record holder. Bec captured a 78.5 kg blue marlin on 3 kg line off Port Stephens — a remarkable technical achievement!Away from charter trips, the entire Dean family enjoys spending time aboard Calypso. Whether at home in Port Stephens or during the season on the Great Barrier Reef, time on the water together remains at the heart of their lifestyle. For the Dean family, fishing is more than a profession — it’s a shared passion and a way of life built around the ocean.
