Cooktown: A Strategic Base for Black Marlin Fishing

Historically Cooktown is best known as the safe harbour where Captain James Cook repaired the Endeavour in 1770 after running aground on the Great Barrier Reef. And it’s this same sheltered river natural harbour and proximity to the reef that has made it a natural launch point for the marlin fleet during peak giant black marlin season for decades.

Over 25 Years as a Home Port for the Marlin Fleet

For more than 25 years, Cooktown has been used as a primary base by the Cairns heavy-tackle marlin fleet. This long-standing relationship exists for one principle reason: location.

Cooktown sits almost exactly halfway along the Ribbon Reefs, placing it at the heart of some of the most productive black marlin fishing grounds on the Great Barrier Reef.

Perfectly Positioned on the Ribbon Reefs

From Cooktown, vessels can efficiently fish:

    • North-east along the upper Ribbon Reefs

    • South along the lower ribbons

This allows crews to move with and stay on the fish — adjusting daily to currents and conditions — as well as movements of the main body of fish rather than being locked into a single section of reef.

Cooktown: A town that supports the marlin fleet

Cooktown maintains that small town charm but at the same time offers a complete range of services to support our visiting anglers including: airport transfers, a range of accommodation options, good places to eat out, and reliable bottle shops and alcohol delivery — all familiar with servicing boats and crews during the marlin season.

Down at the wharf, Cooktown really comes hive of activity during the season where you can tie up alongside some of the most respected boats in the industry, swap stories dockside, and quite literally rub shoulders with the who’s who of marlin fishing.
